Amber Cox joined the Houston Dynamo and Dash as Chief Marketing Officer in January 2015. She oversees all aspects of marketing, broadcast, branding, digital/social strategies, public relations and community relations for the two teams as well as BBVA Compass Stadium and Houston Sports Park. Cox joined the Dynamo from the Big East Conference, where she served as the Associate Commissioner for Women’s Basketball for two years. She managed all aspects of the ten-team league, including scheduling, officiating, television, branding and marketing.
Prior to joining the Big East, Cox spent nine seasons with the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). In her final two years with the franchise, she held the joint title of President and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing all business and basketball operations. Cox joined the Mercury in 2005 as the Director of Marketing. She helped grow the team’s fanbase in the Valley through tactical grassroots efforts as well as social and digital strategies. Cox was also actively involved in securing a ground-breaking partnership with Lifelock in 2009, partnering with the Arizona-based company to become the first marquee jersey partner in WNBA history. In her final season with the Mercury, Cox directed the marketing and sales initiatives surrounding the selection of Brittney Griner, the first overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, leading to record-setting sales, website viewership and media impressions. Recognizing her tremendous success and quick climb in the business industry the Phoenix Business Journal named Cox to its Forty-Under-40 Class of 2012.
Prior to joining the professional ranks in 2005, Cox spent five years as the Assistant Director of Athletics in charge of media relations and development at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo. She administered statewide marketing strategies to promote five sports and built internal promotion programs targeting students, faculty and staff. Her duties also included managing the sports information office and game operations, as well as serving as coordinator of the athletic department’s fundraising and community relations efforts. Prior to her time at Columbia College, Cox spent time as an account executive at Visionworks Marketing and Communications, a Columbia-based full-service advertising and marketing agency. She supervised all phases of development plans for the firm’s client base. A Missouri native, Cox earned her bachelor’s degree in communications/journalism and master’s degree in business administration from William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.
